HOUSTON, Texas – Having now won four straight, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team did not drop a set for the second day in a row to secure another 3-0 win and season sweep over Texas Southern Saturday at the Health and Physical Education Arena.
The Islanders (4-1) kept Texas Southern (0-6) under 20 points in the first two sets and although the Tigers showed life in the third for a 21-21 tie, A&M-Corpus Christi took care of business with four consecutive points to take the match without yielding a set.
It was the team's highest offensive performance of the season, turning in a .381 hitting percentage for the match aided by a .500 opening set. Sophomore
Rylee Achtzehn recorded an individual mark of .714 after converting on five of her seven attempts.
"Our team was really working together as a whole group today," said head coach
Steve Greene. "I was so impressed with their focus and communication throughout the match. The serve receive efforts of Kayla [White], Kendall [Mahaney] and Zoria [Heard] were outstanding for us today. Their defense also was on point and really pushed our transition efforts. Texas Southern improved each set and that really shows how well they are coached and challenges us to make changes in order to find a win."
The first set had the Islanders cruise to a 5-0 start with the help of a pair of service aces by White. The kill by sophomore
Tori Arrington capped another scoring run as A&M-Corpus Christi went up 9-2. Junior
Morgan Baese aced the Tigers for a 14-3 lead and then got the kill to close out the first set in a dominate 25-12 fashion.
Back-to-back kills by Arrington and Achtzehm opened the second set before Texas Southern clawed back to tie it up at 5. The double-block by junior

Belle Morgan created some distance as the Islanders went up 8-5 and a 6-0 scoring run had them double up on the Tigers 14-7. Stolfus then hammered it down to secure a 25-17 set two and 2-0 advantage in the match.

McKenna Reiswig kept the Islanders ahead 7-4 in the third. The Tigers would close the gap before the Islanders pulled out again 11-7 off the kill by freshman
Kenna Buchanan. Texas Southern would not back down and kept it close, even taking a 18-15 lead late. Though, A&M-Corpus Christi utilized two big-time scoring runs to stay on top and finish 25-21 for the 3-0 sweep.
A&M-Corpus Christi has now won four matches in a row. The Islanders will take that win streak UTRGV on Tuesday for the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. They will then finally host the Islanders Classic next Thursday through Saturday for its home opener.
