FORT MYERS, Fla. – Continuing its road swing into the state of Florida, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program fell 4-0 to Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday evening at Pickering Field.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi only trailed 1-0 at the half when the Eagles were able to break through in the second. The Islanders mustered four shots from four different student-athletes including senior
Maggie Murray, senior
Molly Arens, junior
Kaitlynn Melton and sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis.
Â
"I got the reaction I wanted after UTRGV and we started amazing with probably the best half of soccer we've played in years. Each penalty against us in the second half deflated us and FGCU showed us why they go to the NCAA Tournament every year," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Kennedy Stelling made 10 saves. It included a penalty kick, though FGCU was able to score off the rebound. Sophomore
Zoe Theriot entered in relief and made four saves in the second half.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi used 22 student-athletes in the contest. Junior
Emma Crump logged a team-high 88 minutes in the back.
Â
It was the first-ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and FGCU. The Eagles were 12-6-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the Atlantic Sun last season and won their conference tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Islanders will remain in the state of Florida for noon (CT) game Sunday at Florida Atlantic. A&M-Corpus Christi is in the midst of a six-game road swing and will return home Thursday, Sept. 14 against UTRGV at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
