Islanders Best By Nicholls to Set Up Rubber Match

THIBODAUX, La. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team (23-26, 11-9 SLC) dropped game two of the weekend series 7-2 to Nicholls (28-20, 13-7 SLC) at Ray E. Didier Field to set up the rubber match on Sunday.

"I feel like we'll come back and play our best game of baseball tomorrow," said head coach Scott Malone. "We'll have [junior] Evans Hendricks and [sophomore] Zach Garcia ready to roll and they just need to go and get us some outs.

Nicholls surmounted an early 4-0 lead spread over the initial five innings before A&M-Corpus Christi plated its first run of the game in the top of the sixth. Senior Leo Markotic came home as freshman Smith-Johnson sent a ball through the left side for the RBI single.

The Colonels added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-1 game in favor of the red.

In the ninth inning, junior Tre Jones scored the final run of the game to give sophomore Chance Reisdorph an RBI on the night.

Junior Colin Purcell started on the mound and threw four innings before classmate James Burchett entered in relief. Other pitchers making an appearance in the game included sophomore Marco Gutierrez, junior Dalton LeBlanc, and classmates Austin Dean and Samuel Feltz. Feltz closed out the game for the blue and green.

Senior Leo Markotic earned the first hit of the performance while scoring on the team's second hit two at-bats later by Smith-Johnson for the RBI. Markotic made his way to second for a double with the hit. Jones collected a hit as well and made his way back to home to score a run.

With a watchful eye, the Islanders forced five walks early in the game. As a collective unit, the pitchers struck out nine batters.

Returning to the diamond on Sunday, A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls take on each other in the rubber match at 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field.
