Early Advantage Falls Short for Islanders in Loss to Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. - After taking an early lead, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (23-27, 11-10 SLC) fell to Nicholls (29-20, 14-7 SLC) 9-6 in the series finale Sunday afternoon.

"I thought we really got after them (in the first) and put them in a corner, but they're a really good team and fought their way out," said head coach Scott Malone. "We'll get after UIW next week and see where we can finish in the seeding and hopefully two weeks from now, it's us jumping around and hollering because we won the conference tournament."

As junior Diego Johnson and senior Brendan Ryan sat on second and third respectively, Max Puls, a senior, smashed his third home run of the weekend out of the park in right field to give the Islanders an early 3-0 advantage. A few pitches later senior Leo Markotic plated the fourth run of the game on an RBI single by junior Tre Jones.

Despite the advantage after the first, the Colonels struck back with back-to-back innings with four runs each to gain an 8-4 lead.

After hanging a zero on the board for Nicholls, Markotic cut into the lead as he came home on a fielding error, giving the opportunity for Jones to score in the next at-bat off a single by sophomore Chance Reisdorph. The Colonels scored their ninth and final run of the game in the eighth inning.

Junior Evans Hendricks started on the bump for the Islanders and went through 1.2 innings before sophomore Zach Garcia entered in relief, pitching for four innings even. Making appearances in the game were redshirt junior Jaime Ramirez Jr, junior Austin Dean, and sophomore Kyle Dickey who closed out the game.

The Islanders were narrowly outhit, collecting 12 hits compared to the 13 of the Colonels. Two of those hits came in the shape of a double and as a home run.

A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to face UIW in a three-game series to round out conference play starting Thursday evening.
