BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third consecutive year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program was crowned champion of the PGA Works Collegiate Championship after crushing the school record with an 886 score.
Junior
Lucie Charbonnier defended her individual title and won the tournament for the second straight year with a 213, which tied her own school record for the third time. Charbonnier, an All-Conference First-Team honoree, carded two rounds in the 60's which included a 67 in round one and a 68 in round three.
A&M-Corpus Christi's 868 topped the previous school record by 16 strokes as the Islanders recorded an 886 at the Islander Classic in 2021-22. The Islanders also broke the school record for best single round with a 279, which bested the school record of 283 set Monday. Thus, A&M-Corpus Christi notched the two best rounds in school history this week at Shoal Creek Club.
The Islanders won the tournament by 30 strokes. Last year, they won the tournament by 14 strokes with a 913, and in 2020-21 they won it by 28 shots with a 928. Charbonnier won the tournament last year with a 225, thus improving by 12 strokes.
"The team played with amazing confidence today. With a big lead going into the day, a letdown could have happened. The ladies were on a mission, and they played the way I always knew they could play," said head coach
Pat Stephens.
A&M-Corpus Christi swept the podium individually. Runner-up honors went to freshman
Lucia Ramirez as she stayed consistent with scores of 70, 73 and 72 for a 215 total. In third was senior
Maria Beltran with a 217.
Senior
Lucy Martinez also stood out with a sixth-place score of 223. Freshman
Elsa Tornvall was one of three Islanders to register her best score in the final round as her 74 Wednesday resulted in a 236 total for a top-25 finish.
"There were several notable performances from this record-breaking week. Lucie won for the second time after coming back from her surgery. Lucia had a breakout tournament and gave her teammate a run for the individual title. It was also great to see our two seniors, Lucy and Maria go out as winners, finishing third and sixth. Elsa played well today with a two-over 73," Stephens said. "The future looks good for the Islanders women's golf program."
