Pat Stephens

Pat Stephens was promoted to head coach in Jan. 2022 after previously serving as an assistant coach with the Islanders since Sept. 2018.

Stephens is coming off a 2023 season where the Islanders three-peated at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship, winning their postseason tournament for the third year in a row. A&M-Corpus Christi swept the podium with individual finishes of first, second and third-place.

The Islanders broke the school record for best tournament with an 868, which was 16 strokes better than the previous mark of 886 set the previous season. A&M-Corpus Christi also notched the best two scoring rounds in school history with a 279 and 283 at Shoal Creek Club.

In his first season at the helm in 2022, he led the women's golf team to six top-five finishes out of the seven tournaments the team competed in since Stephens was promoted to head coach.

He coached two athletes to their first career individual wins, including at the Islander Classic where the Islanders finished third and at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship where the Islanders won for the second year in a row. The PGA Works Collegiate Championship marked Stephens' first win as the head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The team shot a record-low 54-hole total of an 886 at the Islander Classic under Stephens' direction. The Islanders tied for first at the UTRGV Invitational and had a runner-up finish at the Stetson Babs Steffens Invitational.

At the Southland Conference Tournament, A&M-Corpus Christi matched its best finish at the tournament since 2011 with fourth-place.

Prior to A&M-Corpus Christi, Stephens was the head coach at Eastern Kentucky and led the Colonels to three Ohio Valley Conference titles and appeared in the NCAA Championships three times. He also coached three student-athletes who reached the NCAA Championships as individuals. During his time, Stephens was chosen as the OVC's Coach of the Year five times, three of those awards coming in the past four seasons. The Colonels finished first in 45 events and boasted 35 individual tournament champions. He had 16 golfers named to OVC All-Tournament teams and during his tenure, he had 35 student-athletes named All-Conference.

Eastern Kentucky had 211 top-10 team finishes including 146 events where the Colonels finished in the top five. EKU finished among the top 10 at every event it competed at during the 2003-04, 2006-07 and 2009-10 seasons. The team registered 122 top-10 individual performances in 142 events the past 12 seasons. In 2017-18, the Colonels won two tournaments and the team finished among the top-10 in eight of their 10 events. At The Hootie at the Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, one of the most prestigious college golf events in the nation, Stephens helped lead EKU to a very respectable tie for 12th.

Stephens played collegiately for the University of Kentucky before transferring to Eastern Kentucky for his final two seasons. He won the Ohio Valley Conference Title in 1982 and took second as a senior in 1983. Following his collegiate career, Stephens extended his playing career, competing on mini-tours throughout the South and qualifying for several major competitions. He was a three-time runner-up in the Kentucky Open (1978, 1983 and 1995), and in 1996 and 2007 was named the Kentucky PGA Player of the Year.

Stephens qualified for the 1988 US Open, played at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. More recently, he was selected to the Ohio Valley Conference's 40th Anniversary All-Time Golf Team. He was chosen as the Kentucky PGA Senior Player of the Year in 2012 and 2014. Stephens has been a PGA Class A member for the past 27 years.

Stephens was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame in 2022.
