BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Breaking the school record for best round, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program is off to a hot start and sits in first-place after day one of three at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
The Islanders, who are the two-time defending champions of the tournament, carded a 283 (-1) on Monday at Bent Brook Golf Course, which broke the school record of 285 set earlier this year at the Texas State Invitational. It was the first time A&M-Corpus Christi ever shot under par.
A&M-Corpus Christi has an eight-stroke lead over Howard, which is in second-place with a 291 (+7). The Islanders are 14 strokes ahead of Delaware State for third.
Individually, junior
Lucie Charbonnier tied the school record for low round with a 67. It matched Vanessa Johnson's mark set in 2013-14 at FIU. Charbonnier topped her own personal record of 68 set earlier this year and it was the third time this season she shot in the 60's. Charbonnier won the tournament last year with a 225.
Charbonnier, an All-Conference First-Team honoree and three-time All-Conference selection in her career, is in first-place and three strokes ahead of freshman
Lucia Ramirez who is in second with a 70. Ramirez's 70 tied her personal record for low round.
All five Islanders are top-15 on the leaderboard. Seniors
Maria Beltran and
Lucy Martinez are tied for seventh with 73's. Freshman
Elsa Tornvall is in 13th with a 75.
As a team, the Islanders are on the cusp of a school record for best scoring average on the season. They entered the tournament with a 304.67 and 17.76 vs. par, and are trying to break to 17.61 vs. par record set in 2018-19.
Round two will tee-off at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shoal Creek Club. The third and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bent Brook Golf Course.
