A&M-Corpus Christi Splits Doubleheader Against McNeese, Force Rubber Match

LAKE CHARLES, LA - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (14-18, 2-3) split a doubleheader with McNeese (19-11, 3-5) Friday after rain forced the first game to be moved from Thursday, falling in the first game 8-3 and winning the second 5-3 at Joe Miller Ballpark.

"It was a crazy day of baseball with 18 competitive innings with light rain on and off," said head coach Scott Malone. "Nothing came easy for us as we played one of the best Southland Conference teams on the road."

The Islanders earned seven hits with three runs in the first game of the series after it was pushed back a day from Thursday night. Senior Brendan Ryan earned the first run of the day for the blue and green in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Chance Reisdorph. Later in the sixth inning, a double by Reisdorph allowed junior Tre Jones and senior Max Puls to come home and bring the game within two.

Jones led the team with two hits in the performance with five others collecting a single hit in the game. Reisdorph had all three RBIs of the game raise his season total to 19.

Three Islanders appeared on the mound, led off by redshirt sophomore Matthew Watson who went on to pitch 5.2 innings while collecting four strikeouts. Sophomore Marco Gutierrez relieved him and followed up with three strikeouts through two innings. Redshirt junior Jaime Ramirez Jr. closed out the game with the final out.

Junior Evans Hendricks made his first collegiate start in the second game of the doubleheader, allowing a single hit through six innings pitched. He struck out eight of the batters he faced and only allowed three walks.

Malone praised Hendricks, remarking, "It was one of our better starts of the year from Evans Hendricks and a great first collegiate start for him. He pounded the strike zone with above average stuff and challenged some of the best hitters in the league."

Hayden Thomas, a senior, entered in the seventh inning for 1.1 innings of work before sophomore Kyle Dickey entered to close out the eighth inning. Dickey was credited with the victory and junior Austin Dean earned his third save of the season after closing out the ninth.

Both teams remained shutout until the sixth inning when junior Sean Curtis scored teh first run of the game on an RBI single by Puls. In the eighth inning, senior Leo Markotic tied teh game up at two off a wild pitch. The Islanders tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth for insurance as Reisdorph, Ryan and junior Diego Johnson all came home.

Four members of the team earned a double in the performance with the final coming from junior Jose Enriquez to score the final run of the game. The team compiled seven hits with six unique Islanders earning at least one.

The Islanders and Cowboys close out the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the game being streamed on ESPN+ with a subscription,
