LAKE CHARLES, LA - After a hard-fought battle, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (14-19, 2-4) fell to McNeese (20-11, 4-5) 4-3 in the Sunday rubber match at Joe Miller Ballpark Saturday afternoon.
"Tough weekend," said head coach
Scott Malone. "We scored one in the first and one in the second to set us up for a good finish and it unraveled. They had a big inning off of our best starter, jumping him for three runs off of four huge swings on the first pitch."
The Islanders scored early in the first with back-to-back hits to bring senior
Brendan Ryan to home plate on a double by sophomore
Chance Reisdorph. In the second inning, the blue and green extended their lead to 2-0 with a single by
Sebastian Trinidad, a junior, to bring home classmate
Sean Curtis.
After a few scoreless innings, A&M-Corpus Christi made its way back on the board in the top of the eighth inning to bring the game within one at 4-3. Junior
Diego Johnson scored on the RBI single by senior
Leo Markotic.
Junior
Colin Purcell to the mound at the start of the game, pitching through 6.2 innings and holding the Cowboys to only three runs on the day. Only the second pitcher on the day, sophomore
Zach Garcia relieved him in the seventh inning and completed the game, striking out one and not allowing a run.
As a collective, the Islanders connected for 11 hits on the day with juniors
Sean Curtis and
Sebastian Trinidad, as well as Ryan, each earning two hits in the performance. Five more Islanders collected a hit to help elevate the team's total.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Chapman Field to host UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
