BEAUMONT, Texas – Concluding conference play with a pair of road victories, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's team topped Lamar 6-1 and the men 5-2 Friday at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
With the women's win, it marked the 10th undefeated conference season for A&M-Corpus Christi tennis and the second for the women. Islanders Tennis won their 31st championship Wednesday and sixth in the last three seasons when the women beat McNeese 6-1. It was the 10th SLC title for the women and fifth regular season crown.
The women, who are now 20-2 overall and 7-0 SLC, extended their winning-streak to nine matches and will be the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
"The Islanders had to really fight today with all our hearts. This match was closer than the score and we had to dig deep and grind. These conference matches are all about heart and fitness and I felt that paid off big for us today," said head coach
Steve Moore. "I have tremendous respect for Lamar, Coach Wong and Coach Shankles. We've had tremendous, intense battles over the past 15 years and we know it's always going to be a fight. But it's also a very respectful rivalry. I'm incredibly proud of our teams because since September they've been paying the price with tough fitness and it paid off again today. I'm proud of these Islanders because of their character, heart and the way they earned it."
