CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After battling back and forth with New Orleans (21-14), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team (14-21) fell 7-6 late at Chapman Field Friday night.
"We have to play better tomorrow by turning the hit column around and playing defense around our guy," said head coach
Scott Malone.
A&M-Corpus Christi set the tone of the game within the first inning as junior
Tre Jones send a grand slam ball out to right field with
Brendan Ryan (senior),
Chance Reisdorph (sophomore) and
Jose Enriquez (junior) all on base. The grand slam was the first for the Islanders since April 14, 2022, exactly a year ago, against HCU by
Brandon Petkoff.
As the Privateers cut into A&M-Corpus Christi's 4-3 lead, the blue and green added to the board as junior
Diego Johnson scored on a single by classmate
Sebastian Trinidad in the fourth. In the following inning, Enriquez scored the sixth run of the game on an RBI single by Jones.
The Islanders saw three pitchers take to the mound with redshirt sophomore
Matthew Watson paving the way through five innings, striking out three batters in the process. Sophomore
Zach Garcia entered in relief for two innings with classmate
Kyle Dickey doing the same for the final two innings.
Jones led the team with two hits on the night with the home run being the lone extra-base hit for the Islanders. The aforementioned player collected five of the Islanders' six RBIs on the night.
Five unique players earned a solo hit on the night, comprised of Ryan, Enriquez,
Diego Johnson, junior
Jake Johnson and Trinidad. Ryan was hit once in the performance for the lone hit-by-pitch for the blue and green.
A&M-Corpus Christi takes on the Privateers in a rematch at Chapman Field Saturday at 6 p.m.
