Home Runs Propel Islanders to Victory Over New Orleans

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In a slugfest of a matchup, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-21) bested New Orleans' baseball program (21-14) 5-3 Saturday night to force a rubber match Sunday afternoon.

"Purcell and Dean both pumped strikes all day and challenged the hitters," said head coach Scott Malone. "I thought we moved around and made a lot of great plays on defense."

Early in the first inning, the Privateers and Islanders were evenly matched at 2-2 with senior Max Puls scoring the first run of the game off of a double by classmate Brendan Ryan. Puls had a double in the previous at-bat to place him in scoring position. After Ryan stole third, he came home on a ground out by Diego Johnson to even the matchup.

Pitchers dominated the next three innings with junior Colin Purcell striking out three in the duration for five on the day. He went on to collect four more strikeouts on 104 pitches thrown, 62 of them counting for strikes. He remained in the game through seven innings.

Jose Enriquez, a junior, hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to regain the lead after New Orleans held on to a 3-2 advantage for several innings. The team never gave up the 4-3 lead as senior MAx Puls sent another home run out of the park in the eighth inning.

Austin Dean, a junior, earned his fourth save of the season, coming into the one-run game to strike out three in relief of Purcell. He threw 29 pitches with 21 headed to the batter as strikes.

The Islanders collected five extra-base hits in the victory with Puls and Enriquez both collected a double and a home run with Ryan coming up with a double in the performance. The trio combined for half of the team's eight hits.

"Enriquez hit the two-run home run and Puls hit the big homer to step up late," praised Malone.

Entering into the rubber match, A&M-Corpus Christi and New Orleans take to the diamond Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. to decide the series.
