CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A celebratory Senior Day concluded with a 5-2 victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program over UIW on Tuesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
After winning the doubles point, A&M-Corpus Christi distinguished seniors
Ulysse Bertrand,
Pascal Lorieul,
Matthieu Peres and
Nathan Schwartz in a special ceremony. All four are on pace to earn a degree this spring.
"We are very proud of our team and our seniors! What Pascal, Matt, Nathan and Ulysse have done for Islanders Tennis is truly amazing; three Southland Championships, 2021 NCAA Tournament and one of only 39 schools in America with men and women at 2021 NCAA championships! Those guys brought tremendous pride to the city, university, and team! What I love about the most is they were always about the team! So many times I hear what people give up when they are a student-athlete, but I don't hear enough about the treasure. The treasure of being on a team that's a family, of making best friends for life, of incredible team unity and culture! And that's what these for seniors represented! They truly stood for all the good values you appreciate as a coach," said head coach
Steve Moore.
A highly competitive doubles point came down to court one. Lorieul and junior
Avery Zavala trailed 6-4 in a tiebreaker when they saved a pair of match points to come back and win 9-7. It was after Schwartz and freshman
Lucas Schurdevin posted a 7-5 victory on court two.
The Islanders won a trio of straight-set singles matches to clinch. It started with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory on court six by Bertrand and followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win from Peres on court four.
The clincher came on court three where Schwartz won 7-6 (1), 6-2.
A thriller came on court one where Zavala found himself down 4-1 in the third set. After coming back to force a tiebreaker at 6-6, he again trailed 4-1 when he rallied to win six of the next seven points for the match. Zavala improved to 12-5 on the year and 3-1 in conference.
The men are now 72-9 SLC under Moore and 10-1 against UIW.
The week continues Wednesday when the women look to clinch the Southland Conference regular season title at 11 a.m. at McNeese. Both the men and women will conclude SLC play Friday at Lamar, and the regular season ends Sunday in a home doubleheader against Howard Payne starting at 11 a.m.
