CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's (7-5) victory over Lindenwood (2-10) Sunday was highlighted by junior
Colin Purcell's complete game shutout performance in the 8-0 performance at Chapman Field.
"I thought it was one of the best five starts I've seen since I've been here," said head coach
Scott Malone about Purcell. "I thought he had conviction and was determined to go out there and challenge their guys."
Purcell earned his second victory of the season with a complete game performance. He only allowed on hit on the day while striking out eight of the 29 batters he faced. Purcell only walked one batter through the 88 pitches he threw.
Senior
Brendan Ryan scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning off of a single by freshman
Christian Smith-Johnson. Sophomore
Chance Reisdorph earned two runs batted in in the fourth inning as junior
Jose Enriquez and senior
Josh Caraway made their way home. Prior to making their way home, the duo performed a double-steal to get on second and third.
Junior
Tre Jones brought in the fourth runner of the day in the fifth inning as Smith-Johnson came home for his first run of the day. In the ensuing inning,
Sebastian Trinidad, a junior, kept the scoring rolling for the Islanders as Ryan launched a single up the middle.
In the fifth consecutive inning, the Islanders plated two more with Smith-Johnson scoring again, followed by Caraway on the next play. The Islanders finished with eight runs in the performance.
A&M-Corpus Christi collected 14 hits on the day off of Lindenwood's pitching staff. The Lions saw five different pitchers take the mound with their starter going the longest at 4.2 innings before three pitchers had an inning each with one pitching a third of the inning.
Senior
Leo Markotic and Ryan each hit a double on the day for the only extra-base hits for either team. Both hitters collected at least one hit on the day out of seven unique batters to do so for the blue and green.
Smith-Johnson and
Tre Jones led the way in hitting with three runs apiece on the day. Both earned an RBI while scoring two runs and one run respectively.
The Islanders return to Chapman Field Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Texas Southern.
