CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (7-6) narrowly fell to Texas Southern (9-6) in a high-scoring duel between the two with a 14-13 final score at Chapman Field Wednesday night.
"We had a rough game," said head coach
Scott Malone. "I thought Texas Southern played lights out from the first pitch."
An eventful first inning saw nine runs put up on the board between both teams. The Tigers struck first, putting up six runs before the Islanders got a chance to retaliate. In the bottom of the first, A&M-Corpus Christi worked to get on base with a double by freshman
Christian Smith-Johnson and a single by senior
Brendan Ryan. With runners on first and second, junior
Tre Jones took to the plate and smashed a home run out to left center field.
The Islanders built off the momentum in the second inning by earning two more runs to make it a one-run game. Sophomore
Chance Reisdorph scored the fourth run of the game when senior
Jake Johnson singled to right field. A couple of pitches later, Ryan hit a sacrifice fly out to center field as
Jose Enriquez, a junior, made it across home plate.
While the third inning remained silent for both sides, the same couldn't be said about the fourth. Texas Southern fought to add two more runs to its lead to hold an 8-5 advantage as the Islanders came up to the plate. Ryan smacked a triple to left field with two runners on base to score J. Johnson and junior
Sebastian Trinidad. Ryan served as the tying run when
Diego Johnson (junior) singled up the middle. The latter gave the Islanders a 9-8 lead on a single two hitters later.
The Tigers saw a two-run home run go out of the park in right field in the top of the fifth to regain a 10-9 lead before earning another run later in the inning. As the Tigers held a two-run advantage, A&M-Corpus Christi struck back with three runs of its own to regain a 12-11 lead. Trinidad gained the first of the three runs as Ryan walked with the bases juiced. With the bases still loaded, D. Johnson drove in two more runs with a single as Smith-Johnson and J. Johnson scored.
Throughout the sixth inning, the bats remained quiet before the Tigers plated two more runs in the top of the seventh followed by a run in the eighth inning. The Islanders scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the ninth as J. Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Reisdorph.
James Trimble earned his first collegiate start as he went on to face eight batters and pitch two-thirds of an inning. Redshirt junior
Jaime Ramirez Jr. came in relief of Trimble in the bottom of the first and pitched for 1.2 innings.
Nash Villegas, a freshman, entered the game in the third inning for the Islanders for the longest stint of the night at that point of 2.0 innings. He struck out three batters before junior
James Burchett entered the game.
After a tying a game-high innings pitched at two even, Burchett was relieved by sophomore
Marco Gutierrez. The latter pitched two-third of an inning before juniors
Samuel Feltz and
Austin Dean closed out the game with an inning pitched each.
Going on its first weekend road trip, A&M-Corpus Christi is traveling to UTSA to play the Roadrunners in a three-game series.
