A&M-Corpus Christi Sweeps Doubleheader After Walk-Off In Night Cap

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (6-5) swept its first doubleheader of the season, winning 13-3 in game one and 7-6 in the latter matchup against Lindenwood (2-9) at Chapman Field Saturday.

"I think game one was about as well as we could play," said head coach Scott Malone. "Game two is what makes baseball fun. James Burchett came out of nowhere and shut down all their momentum. To get three wins in 48 hours is a great weekend."

Junior Tre Jones had a breakout performance in the first game of the series as he scored four times for the Islanders, earning two walks with two hits, hitting 1.000. Both of Jones' hits were triples to help extend the team's lead in the nation for the category at 11 through as many games. In the latter game, Jones earned one hit and brought in two runs.

In addition to seeing eight different batters combine for 20 runs on the day, A&M-Corpus Christi fought its way to double-digit extra-base hits at 10 between both performances on the diamond. Senior Brendan Ryan hit a home run, the lone one scored by the Islanders, to go with Jones' two triples and seven doubles between six unique hitters.

The bats remained hot for both games as the team collected 12 hits in the first game and 20 in the latter. Every starter would collect at least one hit between the two games.

Sophomore Zach Garcia made the start on the mound for the first game, going on to pitch five innings while earning seven strikeouts in the process. Freshman Nash Villegas came in relief of Garcia to start the sixth inning and closed out the game for the blue and green with five strikeouts on nine batters faced.

Game two saw four Islanders take to the mound, started by Matthew Watson, a redshirt sophomore, who pitched a majority of the game at 5.1 innings, earning three strikeouts. Watson was followed by junior Sean Sieve for two innings before sophomore Marco Gutierrez entered the game. Junior James Burchett earned the win for the Islanders as he pitched two complete innings to close out the game. Both Sieve and Burchett earned two strikeouts respectively.

A&M-Corpus Christi took an early 3-0 lead in the first matchup, later finding the game at 3-2 before scoring four consecutive innings to leave the final at 13-3. The two team battled back and forth in the second meeting as the Islanders took an early 2-1 lead before the Lions tied the game up at two. After getting a one-run advantage, the Islanders saw the matchup tied at three in the sixth inning. After Lindenwood battled back from a 6-3 deficit, the Islanders walked off the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with two consecutive singles.

Both victories helped the Islanders to claim the series with a 3-0 lead heading into tomorrow's finale. A&M-Corpus Christi and Lindenwood look to wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Chapman Field.
