Baseball Drops First Game to Abilene Christian

ABILENE, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (13-14) fell to Abilene Christian (20-6) 9-7 Friday evening at Crutcher Scott Field in a back-and-forth game between the two.

"We ran into a really good team," said head coach Scott Malone. "We had a 5-1 lead after three and their starter only got better after we put five runs on him. That's the sign of a Friday front line guy."

A&M-Corpus Christi drew first blood in the top of the first as senior Brendan Ryan scored on a single by junior Diego Johnson coupled with an error. In the ensuing half-inning, the Wildcats struck back with a run of their own to tie the game.

Both teams remained scoreless in the second before the blue and green busted opn the doors with four runs in the third inning. Diego Johnson scored on a single by Chance Reisdorph after walking to get on base and a single by classmate Tre Jones advanced him to third. In the next at-bat, junior Jose Enriquez sent a home run ball out of the park in right field to score both Reisdorph and Jones, trotting in after both runners.

Abilene Christian scattered six runs over three innings to take a 7-5 lead over the Islanders heading into the seventh inning. The Islanders brought the game back within one in the eighth inning as senior Leo Markotic scored the sixth run of the game for the team. The Wildcats scored two more in the bottom-half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead.

The Islanders scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth inning with a solo shot out of the park by Ryan for a home run, making it a final score of 9-7.

Hayden Thomas, a senior, made the start on the mound, being relieved in the fifth inning by redshirt junior Jaime Ramirez Jr. Thomas pitched four innings with Ramirez Jr. fighting through 1.2 innings before redshirt sophomore Matthew Watson come into the game. Watson pitched for 1.1 innings before sophomore Kyle Dickey collected the last three outs of the game.

The Islanders earned 11 hits in the outing compared to the Wildcats' 14 in the performance. Three of those hits came off of doubles with two as home runs.

A&M-Corpus Christi returns to the diamond against Nebraska on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. for a neutral site game between the two.
