CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In the fourth game of the season between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-2) and UTSAÂ (20-6), the Islanders claimed an 8-2 victory at Chapman Field Tuesday evening, taking an early lead they never relinquished.
"UTSA came in 20-5 with a great RPI so I knew we needed our 'A' game and I thought we played it. That's what's fun for me," said head coach
Scott Malone. "These 40 guys put in the work and came out against a good crowd, so I thought we got after it and put on a great show."
Redshirt sophomore
Matthew Watson made the start on the mound in the green jersey, allowing only two runs through 5.1 innings, earning the win in the performance. During the sixth, sophomore
Kyle Dickey entered the game in relief of Watson, performing 2.2 innings on the mound and striking out two. Junior
Evans Hendricks closed out the game in the ninth inning with one walk and three strikeouts.
Early in the first inning, the Islanders claimed a 1-0 lead after two doubles and a groundout and never let it escape. Breaking open the jar, four runs were scored in the bottom of the third inning before the Roadrunners retaliated with a run in fifth and sixth inning respectively. However, the Islanders sealed the win in the sixth by adding three insurance runs to the board.
Both teams were gridlocked at three doubles on the night with the Islanders outhitting the Roadrunners 11-7. No errors were committed by the former team with the orange of UTSA committing the sole error on a failed pick-off attempt.
Four batters earned two hits for the home team with senior
Max Puls, the leadoff hitter, leading the way, joined by juniors
Diego Johnson,
Tre Jones and
Sean Curtis. Three other Islanders put up at least one run as well on the night.
Puls, Johnson and junior
Josh Caraway each collected a double, the only extra-base hits for the Islanders. The aforementioned two batters collected an RBI each with Caraway adding three to his total on the season.Â
A&M-Corpus Christi takes to the road for Abilene, Texas to face Abilene Christian University twice and Nebraska once.
