CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team (13-9) fell to Southeastern (11-12) 10-4 in the conference opener for both teams this season at Chapman Field Friday night.
"I thought we snuck in some hits here and there, but we didn't get the big one to get back in the game," said head coach
Scott Malone. "It's not easy and it's tough, but it's what it takes to win."
The Islanders combined for 10 hits on the night with eight different batters earning at least one on the day. Junior
Jose Enriquez and sophomore
Chance Reisdorph each collected two hits in the performance. The latter batter came home to score twice for the blue and green.
In addition to Reisdorph, seniors
Max Puls and
Leo Markotic trotted in for a run each. The Islanders scored one in the fourth and eighth innings with two coming in the fifth.
Hayden Thomas took to the mound for the sixth start of his senior campaign, pitching 4.2 innings and collecting four strikeouts before being relieved in the fifth inning by sophomore
Kyle Dickey. Dickey made his way through 1.1 innings, followed by juniors
Samuel Feltz and
James Burchett. Freshman
Kody Gibbs closed out the game with the final out for the Islanders. The unit struck out eight batters collectively.
The Islanders earned one extra-base hit with a ground-rule double by Enriquez to left field before the ball got stuck in the tarp.
A&M-Corpus Christi and the Lions return to Chapman Field for a rematch Saturday at 2 p.m., available on ESPN+ with a subscription with live stats free to follow along.
