Late Scoring By A&M-Corpus Christi Not Enough To Surpass Southeastern

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Looking to avenge Friday's loss, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-13) fell to Southeastern baseball (14-9) 7-5 in a scoring duel at Chapman Field Saturday afternoon.

"As soon as they scored in the sixth spot early, I told them it's going to be a 7-7 game in an hour," said head coach Scott Malone. "If you walk around and ask people in the park, they'd say we were five minutes away from being at 7-7. They're playing like a championship-level team.

Senior Leo Markotic saw several pitches he liked, hitting three for five on the day while scoring a run in the process. In his second plate appearance, he connected for a double in the fourth inning, later coming back to the plate to score his lone run for the Islanders.

Max Puls, a classmate of the aforementioned Markotic, scored a pair of runs for A&M-Corpus Christi, also connecting for a couple of hits, including a home run to lead off the fifth inning. Puls earned an RBI for the home run and drew a walk the inning prior.

Collectively earning 11 hits in the performance, the Islanders saw six unique players earn a hit on the day, once again out-hitting the Lions on the second day (11-10).

Making his fifth start for the blue and green was junior Colin Purcell who went on to pitch four complete innings, striking out six batters on the mound. The six strikeouts marked half of the team's total as each of the five pitchers fought to get at least one. Sophomore Marco Gutierrez made his 11th appearance of the season in the fifth inning to face four batters until Evans Hendricks, a junior, relived him.

Hendricks saw 1.1 innings of action after closing out the fifth and fighting through the sixth striking out a quarter of the team's final. Redshirt sophomore pitched from the seventh up to the last out which was recorded by junior Austin Dean in the lone batter he faced.

The Islanders and Lions face each other once more Sunday at 1 p.m. at Chapman Field in the series finale as the former looks to claim its first conference victory.
