Islanders Narrowly Fall to Texas State on Road

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team (11-11) fell on the road to a strong Texas State program (14-6) 7-5 on the road at Bobcat Ballpark Tuesday afternoon.

"I still believe this is a really good team and we're coming down on the heavy part of the schedule," said head coach Scott Malone. "The expectation for everyone is to be one of the best teams in the Southland."

Swinging the bats early, A&M-Corpus Christi collected two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead to set the tone of the game. With runners positioned on first and second, senior Max Puls singles out to left field for the first run of the game. Two batters later, junior Tre Jones singled to bring home classmate Diego Johnson. In retaliation, the Bobcats plated two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Texas State scored three more in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.

After the Bobcats earned two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, Puls struck back with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to cut into the 7-4 lead. The homer was the first of the season for Puls and the eighth of the season for A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders had more fight in them as they plated freshman Christian Smith-Johnson in the top of the ninth to make it a two-run game.

Redshirt junior Jaime Ramirez Jr. made his first start on the mound for the 2023 season and pitched 2.1 innings en route to striking out two of the 12 batters he faced. Senior Sean Sieve came in relief for 1.2 innings, striking out one in the process.

Sophomore Kyle Dickey pitched a complete inning, facing three batters, sending them all back to the dugout before classmate Marco Gutierrez entered the game. Following Gutierrez was junior James Burchett and freshman Nash Villegas. Villegas pitched an inning before freshman Kody Gibbs made his first collegiate appearance in the eighth inning. He managed to strike out two of the four batters he faced in his debut, finishing the game for the Islanders.

The leadoff batters batted .400 on the night with the team earning an average of .286. As the Islanders collected 10 hits on the night, Oral Roberts earned nine to tie the two teams at sixth in the nation in the category.

A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to host Southeastern at Chapman Field to open conference play this Friday through Sunday.
