Baseball Caps Off Harvard Series By Splitting Doubleheader, Claiming Series 3-1

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (11-10) split its doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 7-3 before rebounding to take game two 5-3 against Harvard (2-14) at Chapman Field for a 3-1 series victory.

"Today's win finished off an outstanding week for our guys and we played really good baseball," said head coach Scott Malone. "I thought we pitched well all week and Colin Purcell was able to finish that with another outstanding start."

The Islanders held the Crimson to 16 hits over the course of 16 innings played as junior Colin Purcell allowed only one run in the second game, coming off a no-hit performance in six innings earlier in the week against UTRGV.

The Islanders fell 7-3 in the first game, which was scheduled to last seven innings, after falling to a 5-0 deficit in the third inning. The team fought back with two runs in the bottom half of the third, but earning another run in the sixth wasn't enough as Harvard scored in the prior two innings.

Redshirt sophomore Matthew Watson made the start on the mound to begin the day and went 3.2 innings before sophomore Marco Gutierrez entered the game in relief for two outs. Freshman James Trimble pitched next for A&M-Corpus Christi before sophomore Kyle Dickey closed out the game.

Striking back in game two, the blue and green earned a 5-3 victory in a back-and-forth battle with Harvard. Having fallen early 1-0, the Islanders scored one run in both the fifth and sixth inning before the Crimson tied it up in the top of the seventh with their second run. A&M-Corpus Christi placed three more in the bottom of the seventh, outlasting the one run Harvard scored in the final inning.

Purcell made his second start of the week, pitching six innings and only allowing one earned run while striking out five batters. Classmate Sean Sieve entered the game for an out before junior Austin Dean came in for relief. Dean earned the victory while fellow junior Evans Hendricks was credited with a save after recording the final out of the day.

The Islanders combined for 13 hits on the day while scoring eight through both performances. Senior Brendan Ryan had the lone extra-base hit for the blue and green with a double in game two for his fifth of the season.

With the 3-1 record over the weekend, the Islanders better their all-time mark over the Crimson to 4-1 after having come into the series with a 1-0 victory.

A&M-Corpus Christi takes to the road Tuesday afternoon to tackle Texas State in San Marcos, Texas with the game starting at 6 p.m. and streamed on ESPN+.
