Men’s Tennis Beats Southern Miss with Formidable Singles Performances

LAFAYETTE, La. – Exceptional play in singles resulted in a 5-2 victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program over Southern Miss on Friday at Bourgeois Hall, hosted by UL-Lafayette.
 
The Islanders dropped the doubles point when they stormed back to win five of six singles matches. A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 3-0 on the year.
 
"We battled hard today to beat a very good team. We lost a close double points and then the guys showed tremendous heart and character. They just fought so hard and played with great energy on the court. The real spirit and way these guys encouraged each other made all the difference. I heard these guys yelling for each other nonstop for four hours. I'm very proud of the effort and heart today," said head coach Steve Moore.
 
Senior Ulysse Bertrand turned in a 2-0 day. He teamed with freshman Lucas Schurdevin to win 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. In singles, he ousted Alan Sanson 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot.
 
Also winning in straight sets were seniors Pascal Lorieul and Matthieu Peres. Lorieul notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, while Peres won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi also garnered a pair of three set wins. At the No. 1 spot, junior Avery Zavala dug deep for a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 victory. At No. 6, freshman Tomas Quesada Perez came back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 result.
 
It was the first-ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and USM.
 
The Islanders will play again Saturday when they face the hosting Ragin' Cajuns at 1 p.m. at the Cajun Courts. UL-Lafayette defeated Nicholls 6-1 today and also has wins over Portland and Charlotte this year. A&M-Corpus Christi is 11-9 all-time against the Cajuns.
