Men’s Tennis Sweeps DePaul 4-0, Falls to UL-Lafayette 4-3 at H-E-B Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Going up against a pair of worthy opponents, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program blanked DePaul 4-0 on Friday morning before barely dropping a 4-3 decision to UL-Lafayette in the 59th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

A 4-0 day came from senior Ulysse Bertrand as he won both his singles and doubles matches. His singles wins came in straight sets on court five.

In the first match, the Islanders (6-2) knocked off a DePaul squad that went undefeated in the Big East Conference last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Demons posted a win at Purdue last week.

A&M-Corpus Christi grabbed the doubles point after winning on courts two and three. Senior Nathan Schwartz and freshman Lucas Schurdevin teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 2, and Bertrand and senior Matthieu Peres posted the same score at No. 3.

In singles, Peres topped Pablo Torres Almeida 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Bertrand and freshman Tomas Quesada Perez registered convincing 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 victories at five and six, respectively.

The Islanders again won the doubles point in their afternoon match against the Cajuns. Seniors Pascal Lorieul and Avery Zavala submitted a 6-4 victory at court one, and Bertrand and Peres pulled out a win in a tiebreak on court three.

Though, UL-Lafayette was able to climb out of a hole in singles despite losing the first set on four courts. A&M-Corpus Christi notched victories on courts two and five as Zavala won 7-5, 6-2 and Bertrand won 6-1, 6-2.

The Islanders will play for third-place Saturday at 12 p.m. against Radford.

The women's team will be at home Sunday when they host Sam Houston at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The women will be putting their undefeated 7-0 record on the line.
