Volleyball Goes Unbeaten Again With 3-0 Sweep Versus Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – Cruising to another dominate victory, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team swept Lamar 3-0 Saturday for the second time this season to post another undefeated week of conference play.

The 25-12, 25-20, 25-18 sweep marked A&M-Corpus Christi's (15-8, 10-1 SLC) ninth win in a row, the program's longest winning streak since 2016 when the Islanders won 13 straight. The Islanders have now won 18 in a row against Lamar (1-21, 1-10 SLC) dating back to 2012 and remain the only team in the conference to be undefeated on the road in SLC play.

"Winning on the road is always hard to do and I'm just really proud of the effort we put in today," said head coach Steve Greene. "Our defense really did a nice job making moves and giving us second chances."

The defense remained hot, holding the Cardinals to just a .095 hitting mark. It is the eighth match in a row that the Islanders held their opponent to under a .200 mark and third in the last five matches to hold them to under a .100 clip.

Junior Kyndal Payne defended the whole court, leading the match with 13 digs and five blocks, including four solos. Junior Kayla White followed with 12 digs while sophomore Zoria Heard picked up six.

Adding to her all-around play, Payne recorded the match-high 16 kills for her second straight double-double, fifth in conference play and 10th on the year. She hit for a .414 for her sixth time this year hitting above .400.

Junior Leah Stolfus and sophomore Tori Arrington both registered eight kills for above .350 attack percentages. Graduate Morgan Smith and junior Morgan Baese contributed five kills each.

"Tori was attacking at a really high level and made some big plays down the stretch. Kyndal played a really nice overall match, her attacking utilized a lot of different shots and her defense and serve receive was really consistent. Our trio of middles in Leah, Morgan Smith, and Tayah Little all did really well attacking and blocking throughout the match," said Greene.

Running the offense to a .252 efficiency was graduate Belle Morgan, a four-time SLC Setter of the Week recipient. Following her near triple-double of 39 assists, 10 kills, and nine digs Thursday night, Morgan dished out another 39-assist performance in addition to five digs, a solo block, and a pair of aces.

White also dropped in two service aces against the Cardinals while remaining perfect on serve receive herself. The Islanders entered the match leading the league in opponent service aces and will improve after only allowing one against them. They are the only team in the Southland to concede less than 100 opponent service aces on the year.

The Islanders will return home for two midweek matchups in the Dugan Wellness Center. They will host UIW Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in their "Blue Out" match before playing HCU Thursday at 6: 30 p.m. for their annual "Dig Pink" match.

"We are looking forward to being home Tuesday and Thursday night and performing in front of our fans. The home court advantage at the Dugan Wellness Center is such a nice thing to have for our team," Greene said.
