Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Unbeaten Islanders Knock Off UTEP 6-1

EL PASO, Texas – Improving to 4-0 on the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program tallied a convincing 6-1 road win over UTEP on Wednesday at the El Paso Tennis Club.

All four of A&M-Corpus Christi's wins this year have been on the road. The team is off to a 4-0 start for the fifth year in a row. The Islanders have been in the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years.

"I'm very proud of the heart and mental toughness of these girls. They really chose the character road to fight and find away. Every player was important today and gave all their heart. We always judge our team by two things we can control – did we play each present point with intensity and did we cheer for each other like a unified family? Win or lose - that is the focus. I thought they made great choices and strived hard to be good at those two things today. We have a lot of hard work to do and we are ready to do it, but I love the character of this team," said head coach Steve Moore.

The Islanders got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point. Junior Emma Aucagne and freshman Palina Saulevich got it started with a 6-4 win on court two, and junior Kateryna Rublevska and freshman Sofia Pinto clinched with a 7-5 victory at No. 3.

A&M-Corpus Christi extended its lead to 2-0 with a lopsided 6-2, 6-2 win by senior Victoire Delattre on court five in singles. Rublevska followed by winning her second match of the day 6-4, 7-5 on court six.

The clinching match came on court four as junior Valeria Cherfus finished it off 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.

The Islanders and the Miners played out the final matches, which both ended in A&M-Corpus Christi's favor. Aucagne came back to win 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 on court one, and Pinto registered a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory on court three.

As a team, the Islanders are now 17-3 on the year in singles.

Women's tennis will complete their season-opening five match road swing Monday when they travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 1 p.m. first serve. The home opener is Wednesday, Feb. 1 when they host UTSA at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
