COPRUS CHRISTI, Texas - A rematch is set between the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team and UTRGV Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT at the Dugan Wellness Center for game two of the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
The South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is an annual rivalry series in which A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV compete against each other in 12 sports. As an institution, the Islanders lead the all-time series 5-1.
UTRGV (6-1) earned three points towards the competition after getting the grueling 3-2 victory over the Islanders (0-7) last week in Edinburg. A&M-Corpus Christi beat out UTRGV in set two 26-24 and set three 33-31, but the Vaqueros were able to take sets one, four and five for the deciding victory. The first three sets were consecutively decided by just two-points.
During the match, senior
Faith Panhans was two kills away from a triple-double, registering 58 assists, 12 digs and eight kills. Sophomore
Kyndal Payne also turned in a double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs. Both Panhans and Payne have two double-doubles so far this season.
Sophomore
Leah Stolfus picked up a team-high 16 kills and turned in a season-best .533 attack percentage in the match against the Vaqueros. During the Islanders Classic, she averaged a .388 mark and now leads the team in kills with 74 at a 2.96 kills per set average. Stolfus and Panhans were selected to the Islanders Classic All-Tournament team.
Senior
Carissa Barnes has been the match-leader in digs in four matches this year, including getting a career-high 45 digs against Tulsa, breaking both the school and the Devaney Sports Center record for most digs in a match. She totals 133 digs through 25 sets and is averaging a team-high 5.32 digs per set. She also leads the team in service aces at nine.
Freshman
Tayah Little garners a team-high 18 blocks, four of which were solo blocks. She has 50 kills on the season so far.
The Islanders were picked to finish first in the SLC Preseason Poll, with Panhans, Barnes and Payne all being selected to the preseason first team.
A&M-Corpus Christi is 27-22 all-time against UTRGV and 14-8 when played at the Dugan Wellness Center. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
