Islanders Fall Despite 16 Hits at UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball fell to UIW 8-6 at Daniel Sullivan Field despite a multitude of hits behind the plate to lead the offense.

"Zach Garcia [freshman] was our bright spot on the mound and a guy we can count on to get us some momentum," said head coach Scott Malone. "They worked their way through the heart of our lineup to end the game which made for a tough night. We'll need to get tomorrow turned around and come out tomorrow ready to go."

A&M-Corpus Christi began the home run stampede in the top of the fifth inning when Tucker McEnroe, a redshirt freshman, sent a solo home run out to right field to tie the game at one apiece. Shortly after, the Islanders added two more to the board off of a home run by junior Brendan Ryan which brought in senior Steven Rivera-Chijin for an RBI.

Sophomore Brandon Petkoff hit the third home run of the game for the Islanders out to right field as well, bringing in sophomore Josh Caraway in the sixth inning. The Islanders experienced a dry spell for one inning before Leo Markotic, a junior, scored off of a single by sophomore Cole Modgling who had just come in to pinch-hit which was the last run scored of the game.

A&M-Corpus Christi combined for 16 hits with five different batters collecting multiple hits led by sophomore Tre Jone's three-for-five performance. Junior Max Puls, Ryan, Caraway and Markotic each earned two hits in the performance with every other batter who stepped up to the plate getting one hit.

True freshman Zach Garcia earned his way through 5.2 innings in which he earned six strikeouts and allowed four runs. Senior Henry Bird came in for relief to close out the inning before fellow senior Dom Lopez came in during the seventh inning. JT Moeller, a sophomore, closed out the game for the Islanders by throwing 1.2 innings and only allowing one run compared to two strikeouts.

When discussing tomorrow, Malone said, "I feel like we have a consitent lineup and the guys are going to have to hit tomorrow for us to win. It was nice to see come guys come into the game today and take advantage of it to find some momentum going into tomorrow and next week."

The two teams face off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Daniel Sullivan Field to decide the seventh and eighth seeds of the conference tournament.
