Rivera-Chijin Knocks Three Hits in Defeat to UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team fell to UIW 13-3 in eight innings on the road at Daniel Sullivan Field Thursday night in the first game of the series.

"We talked about the value of having an older team in the post-game circle," said head coach Scott Malone. "We discussed, it's an easy fix and you're just a tiny bit away from a better swing. We need to move it up one notch tomorrow to get a win tomorrow. We'll push the leadership, get loose, have fun and see how it goes tomorrow.

Sophomore Josh Caraway scored first for the Islanders in the top of the second inning as he came home on a single by junior Max Puls. In the third inning, the second run occurred when junior Brendan Ryan stole home. The streak of runs scored in consecutive innings came to an end in the fourth before senior Steven Rivera-Chijin scored one in the fifth inning.

Rivera-Chijin had the best night behind the plate, going three-for-four behind the plate, hitting his 22nd double of the season and scoring a run. Sophomore Diego Johnson collected two hits on the night with a run batted in as Puls was the third player to collect multiple hits for the Islanders at two. Ryan stole two more bases en route to stealing home and scoring the second run of the night.

A multitude of Islanders took to the mound in the game, led off by junior Hayden Thomas who pitched three innings even while striking out two in the process. Sophomore Colin Purcell came in for relief and went 2.1 innings before seeing Marco Gutierrez, a true freshman, come into the game.

Cassius Shy, a senior, entered the game in the sixth inning to be the first left-handed pitcher for the Islanders. Sean Sieve, a sophomore who collected the win in the final game against Nicholls, came in during the seventh and closed out the game in the eighth inning.

A&M-Corpus Christi and UIW continue the series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Daniel Sullivan Field as the Islanders look to even the series.
