Islanders Rout Lions in Mercy Rule 18-4 Victory

HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team run-ruled Southeastern in seven innings in an 18-4 blowout victory at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

"I thought we flexed our muscles against one of the best pitchers in the league," said head coach Scott Malone. "We pitched from the start and played good defense while the bats came out swinging.

Extra-base hits were the name of the game tonight as the team combined for four doubles, three triples and two home runs in the performance. The Islanders scored eight times in the sixth inning with three more coming in the first, second and fifth innings. The team scored one last time in the seventh inning off a home run by sophomore Josh Caraway to left field.

Sophomore Tucker McEnroe led the team, batting three for four, scoring two runs and earning six runs batted in. Caraway had the next most RBIs with three off two for three batting at the plate. Seventeen of the 18 runs counted for an RBI with one not being earned, coming off a wild pitch.

Junior Leo Markotic and sophomore Brandon Petkoff each scored three runs as four other teammates earned two runs apiece. Petkoff hit a triple and a home run to start off the night before coming a couple swings of the bat short of a cycle. He was able to draw a walk as well, scoring each time he got on base.

Freshman Zach Garcia earned his third win this season, taking the mound for six innings and only allowing as many hits, finishing the night with a 4.50 ERA and four strikeouts. Freshman Marco Gutierrez pitched the final inning in relief and struck out one batter while putting the game to rest.

"Garcia was great," praised Malone. "It's tough to pitch in a game that's 15-1 and keep your focus. Gutierrez navigated a tough last inning and got the batters out."

The series will resume tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. as the Islanders continue to fight for the series victory.
