NEW ORLEANS – For the second consecutive year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program hoisted the Southland Conference Tournament trophy after defeating NJIT 4-1 in the finals on Sunday at the University Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Islanders (22-3) won the championship and their sixth consecutive match after pulling out the doubles point and four singles courts over fourth-seeded NJIT (12-8).
"We will always remember the heart these girls showed today and how they fought for each other. Three matches in three days in 90-degree heat. It comes down to heart, fitness and commitment to fight, and that's exactly what they did," said head coach
Steve Moore. "Lots of respect for NJIT and the talented team they have. They fought very hard also. But we're just so proud of the gritty way we won and the price our girls paid all year to have the fitness for this moment."
The Islanders started it off by winning courts two and three in doubles. Sophomores
Leopoldine Boisseau and
Kateryna Rublevska won 6-3 on No. 3. The clinch came at No. 2 where juniors
Camille Townsend and
Mariya Shumeika also won 6-3.
In singles, sophomore
Victoire Delattre cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court five. On the court next to her, Rublevska won her second match of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 decision on court six.
The championship clincher came on court three where Shumeika finished off Sandra Dzhambazov 6-4, 6-3. After the tournament, Shumeika was named the SLC Tournament MVP.
A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis won its ninth conference championship and will make its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The team will learn its destination and opponent on Monday, May 2, during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show at 5:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
