NEW ORLEANS – After dropping the doubles point, the second-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program fought back for a 4-1 win in the semifinals of the SLC Championship over third-seeded New Orleans on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The Islanders (21-3) won five first sets in singles to turn the tide of the match.
"I cannot say enough about the heart of these girls. They way they rose up was incredible. New Orleans at home is always so tough, and even tougher when they win the doubles point," said head coach
Steve Moore. "But these girls showed big time character, go back up and fought with such heart and tenacity. We are just so proud of their character, grit and the way they play for each other."
In doubles, the Islanders registered a win on court three from sophomores
Leopoldine Boisseau and
Kateryna Rublevska 6-2. Though, the Privateers grabbed courts one and two.
In singles, A&M-Corpus Christi knotted up the overall score 1-1 with a straight-set win by junior
Camille Townsend. She finished off Ank Vullings 6-3, 6-4.
The Islanders took a 2-1 lead with a win by sophomore
Victoire Delattre on court five. She grinded out a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Salma Abdelrahim.
A pair of back-and-forth sets came on court three where junior
Mariya Shumeika erased a pair of deficits to win two tiebreakers 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5).
The clinch came on court one from sophomore
Emma Aucagne. The SLC Player of the Year outlasted Lina Hohnhold 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
A&M-Corpus Christi will meet fourth-seeded NJIT in the championship match at 10 a.m. Sunday. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The women will be playing for their ninth championship in program history, fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and second in a row.
