A&M-Corpus Christi Powers Past UNO to Even Series

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team came away with an 11-9 victory over New Orleans at Maestri Field to force a rubber match Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Sophomore Diego Johnson highlighted the Islanders' squad when he came in during the second inning after an injury, going a perfect four for four at the plate. In the perfect performance, he walked away with two runs, two runs batted in and one walk as half of his hits landed for doubles. He was one of four total players on the team to collect multiple hits.

"We all want Johnson to play and in the lineup, but we don't want to push his injury," said head coach Scott Malone. "He gave us everything he had and sparked us."

A&M-Corpus Christi collected the first score of the game to lead 1-0 when Johnson scored on a groundout. The fourth inning was silent before the Islanders exploded for five runs in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Tre Jones doubled to bring in Steven Rivera-Chijin (senior), Johnson and Tucker McEnroe (sophomore).

Scoring didn't stop there as A&M-Corpus Christi scored in three consecutive innings after as sophomore Max Puls scored on a single by Johnson in the sixth. Sophomore Josh Caraway and junior Leo Markotic kicked things off in the seventh, coming home off a single by McEnroe. Max Puls, a sophomore, scored off another hit by Johnson later in the inning. The final run came off a wild pitch with Markotic taking home.

Senior Hayden Thomas took the mound to start and pitched four innings while seeing 23 batters. Freshman Clay Westbrook came in for relief in the top of the fifth inning, pitching one inning and striking out every batter he faced. Leo Perez, another senior, came into the game for a 3.1 inning performance before sophomore Jaime Ramirez Jr. closed out the game.
