Baseball Storms Back to Win in Extra Innings

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team claimed an extra-innings victory over Prairie View by overcoming a 4-2 deficit to win 8-5 at Tankersley Field.

Anytime you win, you leave feeling good," said head coach Scott Malone. "They fought until the last end and that makes me proud of them. We had some massive at-bats in the end."

Heading into the fifth inning, the Islanders trailed 4-0  before earning a run in the top of the fifth as sophomore Tre Jones hit a double to bring in senior Steven Rivera-Chijin. Two scoreless innings later, the team kept the fight alive with another run in the eighth when freshman Cole Modgling was walked to bring in sophomore Tucker McEnroe. The game nearly came to a close in the ninth before a call was reversed, giving Tre Jones a hit and allowing the Islanders to tie the game as McEnroe homered, bringing in Jones.

Five Islanders earned multiple hits at the plate with junior Leo Markotic earning a single hit as well in the victory. Jones had his second game this season in which he has driven in four runs, collecting half of the team's RBIs. Rivera-Chijin, Jones and McEnroe each scored two runs apiece with sophomores Josh Caraway and Nate White both earning one as well.

Nine pitchers took to the mound led by senior Cassius Shy. Seniors continued to flood the mound as Daniel Nelson and Leo Perez came in for relief before the script changed with a freshman coming in with Kyle Dickey. Sebastian Mejia, a sophomore, pitched an inning as fellow sophomores Kennedy Parks and JT Moeller did the same. Freshman Clay Westbrook entered the game before senior Tyler Miller closed out the game.

A&M-Corpus Christi will take a travel day on Thursday before taking on New Orleans on the road for a three-game series at Maestri Field beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
