Late Rally Not Enough in Game Two of Series

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program fell in the second game of the series to Northwestern State 11-8 after a late rally wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

"It feels like it's been a while since we've been in a rut," said head coach Scott Malone. "An eight-run inning is something you don't see very often. It's hard to come back from something like that. I still feel like the guys are confident and we're one of the better teams in the conference."

Sophomore Tre Jones carried a hot bat into yet another game, getting two hits in three plate appearances, scoring two runs and driving in three RBIs. He drew a walk in the performance as well. Josh Caraway, a fellow sophomore, earned three runs, the most for the team, off of one hit and a walk.

The Islanders drew first blood in the game as sophomore Brandon Petkoff brought in senior Steven Rivera-Chijin, who had hit a double prior. The team continued to hold a 1-0 lead until the Demons scored eight runs in the bottom of the third.

A&M-Corpus Christi fought back scoring two in the fourth inning off of a Jones' home run which also brought in Caraway. Caraway scored once again in the top of the sixth when Jones his a double out to left center. Northwestern State plated three more in the sixth as the Islanders scored four in the top of the eighth a little while later. Petkoff scored on a loaded bases situation as Caraway was hit by a pitch. Markotic saw home on a balk before Caraway scored on a wild pitch. The final run came from a passed ball when Jones made it home.

Five pitchers saw the mound as junior Hayden Thomas made the start with freshman Clay Westbrook coming in for relieft in the fifth inning. Sophomores Sean Sieve, Dylan Johnson and Colin Purcell each pitched an inning a piece with the latter two not allowing a run.

The two teams match up again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for the final game of the series before the Islanders head back home.
