CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell to HBU in the series finale rubber match 11-5 at Chapman Field Saturday afternoon.
"It was a rough weekend for us," said head coach
Scott Malone. "We need to figure out how to get better over the next couple of days. We need to keep our chin up and stay positive as we have a lot of baseball left.
The Islanders found home plate five times in the effort with transfer
Cole Modgling scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning. Four more runs came in the fourth inning as sophomore
Tyler Linneweber and junior
Leo Markotic scored when
Steven Rivera-Chijin, a senior, hit a single to cut into the lead. Sophomores
Tucker McEnroe and
Tre Jones each hit a double, driving in a couple runs off of the hits.
Five pitchers took to the mound through the game with sophomore
Jaime Ramirez Jr. earning the start. After Ramirez Jr. threw 2.2 innings, freshman
Marco Gutierrez came in for an out. Sophomores
JT Moeller and
Colin Purcell each took their turn on the mound before senior
Henry Bird closed out the game in the final inning.
In three innings of work, Moeller was the lone Islander not to give up a run in the performance with only two hits coming off him. He struck one batter out en route to the 0.00 ERA showing. Purcell worked the most strikeouts of any pitcher for the team with five of the batters he faced falling victim.
The Islanders extended their lead in doubles in the conference with three players collected them in the performance. Each one came from McEnroe, Jones and Linneweber. As a group, the players managed nine hits.
A&M-Corpus Christi will head to Prairie View A&M to play a non-conference game before heading to New Orleans to resume conference play.
