CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell to HBU 5-3 at Chapman Field Friday night, setting the scene for a rubber match on Saturday.
"It was a roller-coaster three hours on the field," said head coach
Scott Malone. "After a rough start in the first, the hitters came back to tie the game at two apiece to reset the game. In the ninth inning, we made a run at them and fell short of getting the job done."
Junior
Hayden Thomas started on the mound for the Islanders, going 5.1 innings for the longest showing of the night. He gave up four runs and three runs were scored on his watch, but only one run was earned against him. He struck out four batters on the night as well on 76 pitches.
Tyler Miller, a senior, came in for relief in the sixth inning before earning two strikeouts in the two innings of action he saw. Freshman
Clay Westbrook closed out the game by pitching 1.2 innings, striking out half the batters he saw with three and only permitting one hit.
Tre Jones, a sophomore, attempted a cycle on the night, collecting a tripl;e and double in the performance. He earned one of the Islanders' three runs and collected an RBI in the process. Senior
Steven Rivera-Chijin scored another run, batting two-for-five on the night with a double. Sophomore
Max Puls rounded out the scoring for A&M-Corpus Christi with one run on one hit during four plate appearances.
The final game of the series will be played at 1:00 p.m. at Chapman Field to decide who walks away with the 2-1 victory.
