CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball team defeated HBU in the first of three games to be played this weekend 17-4 at Chapman Field in a seven-inning mercy rule victory.
"[Freshman]
Zach Garcia set a great tone again by going out and putting some zeroes on the board," said head coach
Scott Malone. "We got a run in the first and knocked it out of the park in the second inning. It's how you draw it up. We've got our work cut out for us tomorrow with some injuries so we're going to have to play tomorrow and some guys will have to step up."
Sophomore
Brandon Petkoff exploded for the second Friday in a row by collecting a triple and hitting a grand slam home run out of the park on the night. His four runs batted in led the team on the night as he scored two runs in the performance as well, being one of seven players to accomplish the feat. Junior
Leo Markotic was the lone Islander to best Petkoff in most runs scored, reaching home plate three different occasions.
Sophomores
Max Puls and
Tucker McEnroe mimicked one another, both hitting three-for-four on the night as each had two runs and runs batted in as well. McEnroe was the second player behind Petkoff to hit a ball for a triple.
Tre Jones, another sophomore, continued the extra-base hitting as he accumulated a double in the game as well.
Freshman
Zach Garcia was the lone Islander to take the mound for the team, pitching a complete game and not needed any assistance in the process. The freshman earned his fourth win of the year in his fourth start to improve his record to 4-2 with two saves on the season. Garcia permitted only six hits out of 29 batters he faced and allowed only half as many runs with one walk. The longevity of his arm in the seven-inning game brings relief to the bullpen as now the team can save some arms for later in the series. Out of the 87 pitches thrown, he made 61 of them go into the zone for a strike.
A&M-Corpus Christi and HBU take the field again tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in game two of the series this weekend.
