CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell to the Aggies 5-3 Tuesday in its final game at Whataburger Field this season.
"We're a good team," said head coach
Scott Malone. "I'm not surprised it's 5-3 tonight. We need to clean up the things we can control and turn it around this weekend."
The Islanders took an early lead in the game, scoring all three runs within the first three innings of the game. Sophomore
Tre Jones scored the first run of the day on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Fellow sophomore
Josh Caraway smashed a home run out to left field in the bottom of the third, bringing in junior
Leo Markotic to take a 3-0 lead. The Aggies went on to score three in the fifth inning and two in the pursuing innings.
As a team, seven hits were collected with each one coming from a unique batter. Four hitters sat patiently and watched as they were walked to get on base before making their move. The positions shifted as sophomore
Tucker McEnroe started in center field before
Max Puls, another sophomore, entered the game in right field, shifting sophomore
Brandon Petkoff to center.
Senior
Cassius Shy earned the nod for the start tonight, pitching 3.1 innings and only allowing four hits with no runs. Freshman
Clay Westbrook came in for relief during the fourth inning with two runners on base before collecting two outs to end the half. Sophomore
Colin Purcell went out for two innings on the mound before junior
Justin Lewis made an appearance. Senior
Daniel Nelson, freshman
Marco Gutierrez and sophomore
JT Moeller closed out the game with each pitching an inning and not allowing an earned run.
A&M-Corpus Christi continues its homestand at Chapman Field this Thursday against HBU at 6:00 p.m.
