Islanders Win First Conference Series Versus UIW

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team defeated UIW 4-1 on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series at Chapman Field for its fifth series victory this season.

"It's two Saturdays in a row with only one run allowed," said head coach Scott Malone, speaking about junior Hayden Thomas. "I don't know what else you want him to do. And [freshman] Zach Garcia had his back last week with [sophomore] JT Moeller having his back tonight."

Two nights in a row, the Islanders have only seen two pitchers take the mound. Thomas was granted the start today, going on to pitch seven innings, only allowing five hits and a run compared to eight strikeouts. He brought himself, with the team's help, to the fourth win of the season, notching a 4-1 record thus far. Moeller came in to begin the eighth inning and went on to face six batters. He struck out three batters and didn't allow a single hit or run in his time on the mound, earning his first save of the season.

"On the other side, what a night for [sophomore] Tre Jones, having all four of our RBIs," continued Malone. "It happened on a night when they were dialed in on the mound. I've been waiting on him to have one of these games and I'm really excited for him."

Jones had a career night behind the plate he won't easily forget, getting two hits on three at-bats on the night and bringing in all four of the runs. He went on to score a run himself in the performance. Three other Islanders accumulated at least two hits in junior Leo Markotic and sophomores Josh Caraway and Max Puls.

Puls and Jones had the only extra-base hits on the night as Puls smashed a ball out to center field in the bottom of the fourth and Jones blasted a home run to center as well in the second inning. The Islanders as a whole lead the Southland Conference in doubles, now extending their lead further in the category.

A&M-Corpus Christi will look to get its first sweep of the season against UIW at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at Chapman Field.
