LINCOLN, Neb. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team dominated offensively against the Huskers, earning a 21-4 victory in the final game to claim the series 2-1.
I thought we had a great approach today and played as good as we can on offense," said head coach
Scott Malone. "Sophomore
Max Puls had five hits which is a day he won't forget. [We] had quality at-bats from beginning to end."
With both teams tied at one apiece in the series, the Islanders claimed the final game to win their fourth series of the season. The other three came against UT Arlington, Prairie View A&M and Stephen F. Austin all being 2-1. Having outscored the Huskers 16-14 in the first two games, the Islanders knew runs were critical to winning.
Home runs were crucial in the effort as A&M-Corpus Christi slammed five out of the park. Each of them came from a different batter with sophomores
Wesley Mitchell,
Caden Queck,
Tre Jones and
Tyler Linneweber amassing four. JuniorÂ
Justin Taylor, Linneweber, and Queck each hit their first home run of the season. Overall, the Islanders brought in 20 RBIs on the day, smacking the ball around for seven doubles on the day.
Nine of 12 batters got at least one hit on the day with everyone except for freshman
Chance Reisdorph, who never got a chance at the plate, getting at least one run and seven getting two or more runs on the day. Puls led the pack, batting 5 for 6, scoring two runs and two runs batted in. Throughout the game, sophomore
Brendan Ryan hit a milestone being hit for the 11th time this season to lead the country in hit by pitches.
On the mound, senior
Leo Perez altered the momentum from past games in his favor as he pitched through six innings, not allowing a single run and collecting four strikeouts in the performance. Sophomore
JT Moeller came in during the top of the seventh inning in relief of Perez. He proceeded to pitch two innings, collecting a strikeout before sophomore
Kennedy Parks came into the game. After an out, Parks left the game, opening the door for sophomore
Sean Sieve to make his third appearance in the last six games for the Islanders. He collected the final two outs of the game to close the book.
Malone praised the pitchers once again, mentioning, "Perez was outstanding on the mound. He pitched with the lead and threw a ton of strikes with confidence."
While putting themselves on the board first for their sixth game in a row, the Islanders scored in each of the first six innings, shutting out the Huskers 19-0. They scored two more runs in the last inning for insurance as the Huskers scored four in the same timeframe.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return home to play its next game at Chapman Field against Lamar on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
