Islanders Fall to Former Conference Opponent Lamar

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell to former conference rival Lamar University 7-2 in a mid-week game at Chapman Field.

"I think these guys think we're better than that," said head coach Scott Malone. "We still haven't put together our best baseball. We've got to continue to work harder. This loss needs to motivate us to come out and get better here tomorrow."

Junior Justin Taylor led the offensive effort for the Islanders, hitting 3 for 4 and scoring one of the two runs of the game. In the performance, he hit hit a double once and was only left on base once as well. Senior Steven Rivera-Chijin scored the other run for A&M-Corpus Christi also collecting an RBI during the night.

Rivera-Chijin and Taylor collected two doubles for the Islanders who ranked 53rd in all of Division I baseball going into the game. Another double by sophomore Max Puls brings the team's total to 44, which tentatively ties them at 35th in the nation.

Cassius Shy, a senior, made the start on the mound and would be one of seven pitchers to pitch in the game. Shy went 2.1 innings before being relieved by freshman Marco Gutierrez who went on to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out one batter. Rounding out the next two innings were freshman Kyle Dickey and Clay Westbrook, going 0.2 and 1.1 innings respectively. The last three pitchers for the Islanders were sophomores Colin Purcell (1.1 inn.), Dom Lopez (0.0) and Sean Sieve (1.2).

A&M-Corpus Christi will take a day of rest before beginning conference play against UIW this weekend at Chapman Field.
