CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team split a doubleheader with Prairie View A&M at Chapman Field, winning the first game 9-8 before the Panthers claimed a 5-4 victory in the second game.
"We showed some life at the end and I'm glad we came back," said head coach
Scott Malone. "Bases loaded for [sophomores]
Josh Caraway and
Max Puls; those guys have won a lot of games for us. Some days you're going to get a big hit and some days you won't. That's baseball."
Two pitchers saw action on the mound for the Islanders in the first game, senior
Tyler Miller and freshman
Zach Garcia. Both pitchers combined for eight strikeouts on the day as Miller collected five of them over five innings of work. Garcia was credited with the victory after finishing the last four innings, improving his record to 2-0 on the season.
Sophomore
Brendan Ryan led the team in hitting in game one, going 2-4, and collecting three runs and two RBIs. The duo of junior
Justin Taylor and sophomore
Tyler Linneweber combined to go 3-6 with two runs and one RBI in the first game. Ryan, Linneweber, and sophomore
Josh Caraway all had extra-base hits in game one, as Ryan had a pair of doubles while Caraway had both a double and a triple. During the game, Ryan stole his 12th base of the season, bumping him up to fourth on the leaderboard for all of Division I baseball.
In the latter game, senior
Leo Perez was the starting pitcher for the Islanders. Perez was relieved by sophomore
Jaime Ramirez Jr. after an inning of work, and Ramirez Jr. tore through the following six innings. Fellow sophomore
JT Moeller finished up the last two innings, allowing one hit and no runs in the outing.
Ryan once again made the headline for the Islanders as he stole two more bases, bringing his total up to 14, and moving into second for total stolen bases in Division I. Sophomore
Wesley Mitchell and Linneweber both had extra-base hits in game two, as each had a double.
The final game of the series will start at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in a rubber match.
