SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program breezed to a 4-0 victory over UTSA without dropping a set Tuesday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
After winning the doubles point, A&M-Corpus Christi (11-2) was up a set on every singles court. The Islanders clinched the match after winning courts four, five and six.
"This team played very tough and focused today. We are really improving and learning how to play aggressive-smart vs. aggressive-reckless. Also, their fitness has improved dramatically and this is huge since tennis is a game of movement, footwork and balance. This team has great character and they are really growing each match in our journey to play every present point with intensity. We are very proud of their effort and focus today," said head coach
Steve Moore.
A&M-Corpus Christi clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles. The sophomore duo of
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore notched a 6-1 victory to seal it. Aucagne is the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week winner, announced earlier in the day.
In singles, sophomore
Leopoldine Boisseau tallied a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Honore wrapped it up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Both Aucagne and junior
Mariya Shumeika were up a set on courts one and two and were one game away from winning before the Islanders clinched the match. Junior
Camille Townsend was also up a set and leading in the second on court three.
It marked A&M-Corpus Christi's second win over the Roadrunners this season after posting a 6-1 victory at home on Jan. 28. The Islanders are now 15-6 all-time against UTSA.
It was the first of a three-match road stretch as A&M-Corpus Christi will travel to Sam Houston on Sunday and Lamar on Monday.
