BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Several courts were close Sunday when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program took on 19th-ranked Texas A&M at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Nathan Schwartz highlighted the day for A&M-Corpus Christi (4-1) by winning a set at No. 3 singles. It came after he won four games with fellow sophomore
Pascal Lorieul in an unfinished match at No. 1 doubles.
"We lost to a very, very good team today but we fought incredibly hard and learned a lot! I think our guys believe they can play with any team in the country if we fight that hard but commit to being a little more physical and improve a few small things! I'm very proud of the way these guys fought today. Anytime we lost a set I'd look over and we were immediately up in the second set! That's what I love about these guys - their heart, fighting spirit and the way they play for each other," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Schwartz and Lorieul trailed just 5-4 at the top doubles court when play was halted. Schwartz then won the first set 6-4 against Matthis Bondaz in singles. After Bondaz answered with a 6-4 second set to even it, the two were forced to play a third set super tiebreaker since the Aggies (4-0) had already clinched the overall match and Bondaz came out on top 10-2.
Another tight one came at No. 6 singles. Senior
Kyohei Yamanaka was edged 6-4 in the first but led 6-5 in the second. His opponent, Anish Sriniketh, forced a second set tiebreaker where he squeaked by Yamanaka.
As a team, the Islanders won at least a game in every set on every court.
The men will be on the court again Wednesday against UTRGV at the Thomas J. Henry Center in the South Texas Showdown at 12 p.m., presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. The women will host Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
