Final Brackets
SAN ANTONIO – Highlighted by performances in doubles, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program held its own in a stacked field over the weekend at the UTSA Open at the UTSA Tennis Center and Brandeis High School.
The top doubles team of senior
Kyohei Yamanaka and sophomore
Ryuya Ata reached the finals of Flight A. After defeating teams from UL-Lafayette and Abilene Christian, they were barely edged 8-6 by a duo from Arkansas in the finals.
Another strong outing was posted by the Islanders in Flight B. Sophomores
Nathan Schwartz and
Pascal Lorieul took down a SMU team in the first round and finished in third-place with a win over Arkansas.
In flight D, junior
Ulysse Bertrand and sophomore
Guillermo Castaneda grabbed second-place in a round robin format.
In singles, Lorieul picked up a marquee win over Kyle Sillman from SMU 6-4, 6-1 in Flight B. Castaneda and Bertrand also submitted nice wins in Flight C with Castaneda topping student-athletes from ACU and UT Arlington, while Bertrand tallied two victories over UIW.
"These guys competed incredibly hard this weekend. We've they've worked hard on doubles and it showed," said head coach
Steve Moore. "The first day was tough in singles losing four 3rd set tiebreakers but they really bounced back on Saturday winning six matches. The most important thing was their commitment to fight like warriors and truly compete every present point the right way and they did that. The team unity and spirit of this group is amazing! It's fun to coach them. We know the things we need to improve and we're ready to get to work on it."
Both the men and women will be off from competition until Oct. 14 when they compete at Regionals. The men's tournament will be held in College Station, Texas, while the women play in Fort Worth, Texas.
