CORPUS Christi, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball dominated in the first set but couldn't keep the momentum going as UTEP swiped the next three sets for the 3-1 decision Friday night inside Dugan Wellness Center.
For the second time this weekend,
Kyndal Payne tallied double-digit kills with 14 while
Carissa Barnes contributed 20 digs.
The Islanders started off hot, going on a pair of early runs to quickly run up a 14-4 advantage. A&M-Corpus Christi forced six errors and held its opponents to a game-low .077 attack percentage in a runaway 25-12 set win.
UTEP flipped the script in the second, breaking open a tight game with a five-point run to establish its largest lead of the game at 17-14. A Miner attack error paused the outburst, but another damaging five-straight points for the visiting club dug the Islanders into a deeper hole as UTEP evened the match 1-1 behind a 25-16 victory.
The visitors gained the match advantage after a 25-13 score in the third, but the final frame proved closer as the Islanders battled back from an early deficit as a four-point spurt capped by a Payne kill put the home club within two, 16-14. The Islanders trailed by two again after a Miner miscue, but UTEP managed to close out the win on a 25-20 set victory.
The Islanders conclude tournament action against Tarleton State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
