EDINBURG, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball opened weekend play with a decisive 3-0 sweep of Texas Southern Saturday inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Rachel Young buried a team-high nine kills and sported an impressive .563 hitting percentage, while
Carissa Barnes tallied five of the Islanders' 10 service aces in the lopsided win.
The Islanders jumped to a 5-1 lead to start the match, with the Tigers closing within three before A&M-Corpus Christi broke away on an 11-point run, capped by Barnes' fourth ace of the match, to take a big 25-9 set win.
Both teams swapped points to begin the second, with neither side leading by more then four until a 3-0 Islanders run thanks to kills from
Ella Litterell and Young cushioned the gap as the Tigers couldn't keep pace. A&M-Corpus Christi claimed an overwhelming 11 of the final 15 points to close out the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
A 5-0 run punctuated by a pair of aces from
Ece Emrullah put the Islanders in front 11-5, proving to be a lead they would not relinquish. Another 6-0 stretch at the midway point helped the Islanders cruise to the 25-16 decision and match victory. Â Â
