TEMPE, Ariz. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball fell to Cal Poly 3-0 to conclude play at the Arizona State tournament Saturday afternoon at the Desert Financial Arena.
Julia Carter paced the Islanders attack with six kills while
Kylie Filipiak added 11 digs.
The Islanders started off hot, taking advantage of a pair of Mustang errors and Carter kills to establish a 4-0 lead in the first. After both clubs traded points, Cal Poly busted the set wide open with a nine-point outburst to flip the script and cruise to a 25-8 win.
Four ties and a four-point streak for the Islanders that culminated in a Filipiak kill began the second and handed A&M-Corpus Christi a tight 10-9 lead. The Islanders tried to fend off a comeback, but Cal Poly claimed seven of the next eight tallies to steal the lead and a 25-19 set win.
After falling behind 5-2 to open the third, the Islanders took advantage of four Cal Poly miscues and a crucial
Chloe Yerex kill to knot the set, 7-7. Once again, Cal Poly pulled away for the 16-9 advantage before A&M-Corpus Christi engineered an impressive six-point outburst that pulled the Islanders within one, 16-15, on a
Ece Emrullah kill. However, the Islanders rally fell short as the Mustangs countered with their own six-point stretch to wrap up a 25-17 set win and match victory.
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi heads to Nacogdoches, Texas for the SFA tournament that begins with a doubleheader versus UL-Lafayette and Northern Arizona on Friday, Sept. 3.
