BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar scored five runs in a three-inning stretch and kept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi off the board for seven frames, handing the Islanders a 6-3 final and snapping their Southland series streak Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Itchy Burts,
Josh Caraway and
Brendan Ryan each posted multi-hit outings as the trio combined for seven of the Islanders' nine hits.
It took three frames for either team to crack the board, as starting hurler
Hayden Thomas dealt four strikeouts through two before back-to-back Cardinal singles followed by a double to left scored the first two runs to put Lamar ahead 2-0.
The Islanders answered in the fourth courtesy of a wild pitch that scored Caraway after he reached base earlier with a right-field single, but Lamar countered with another two-spot for the 4-1 cushion.
After Lamar tacked on another run in the fifth, the Islanders mounted a sixth-inning rally as three-straight singles from Caraway, Ryan and
Scott Hastings scored two and trimmed it to a two-run deficit before Lamar ended the damage with a punchout.
Lamar's pitching duo of Trevin Michael and Jack Dallas kept the Islanders' bats in check the rest of the way, as Michael added two more scoreless frames to his 8.0 innings stat line before Dallas took over in relief and put the finishing touches on the series split.
Thomas (2-3) took the loss for the Islanders, as he and
Tyler Miller each tossed 4.0 innings and fanned six.
Islanders return to Chapman Field to host Stephen F. Austin in a four-game set starting Friday, May 7 at 6 p.m.
